You just had paint protection film (PPF) installed on your new car to guard against rock chips and scratches. While PPF is extremely durable, it's important to understand its limitations and care requirements to keep your finish looking flawless long-term.
Be very careful which car washes you use with PPF installed. Automatic car washes with stiff brushes can gradually damage the surface over time, causing swirls and fine scratches in your clear coat as it wears down the film’s glossy finish. The bristles can also lift and peel the edges of the PPF. Instead, stick to touchless automatic washes or hand washing yourself to safely clean PPF. Based on our experience, it's best to use a mild soap and microfiber mitts to gently lift dirt. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing too hard, which can mar the PPF surface.
While PPF is highly resistant to UV rays, extended sun exposure can still cause discoloration, clouding, or yellowing over several years. Keep your car in the garage, or use a fitted car cover when possible to minimize UV exposure from the sun. Our experts suggest waxing your PPF two to three times per year, which provides added UV protection by reflecting rays. This helps maintain the clear, glossy, invisible finish for much longer.
PPF is engineered to be very heat-resistant, but it does have temperature limits. According to Forbes, PPF can withstand temperatures up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit before drying out, distorting, or cracking. This means direct contact with very hot engine components or exhaust systems can damage the film. Use extreme caution when washing the engine bay or working near hot areas under the hood. Give these areas time to fully cool before the PPF makes contact.
While PPF is durable, it's not impervious to damage after many years. Regular inspection and maintenance is the key to preserving its protective abilities and flawless appearance long-term. In addition to careful washing, have your PPF inspected annually by a detail shop and reapplied as needed. Repair any chips or cracks immediately to prevent further lifting or peeling. Consider ceramic coating for added gloss and protection over the PPF.
By understanding PPF's limitations and caring for it properly, you can keep it in like-new condition. Use smart maintenance practices to get the most out of your paint protection film.
